“Kiwi Kids Can Cook” is sponsored by Vegetables.co.nz heats have taken place regionally and the grand finale to be held at Westfield Manukau, Sunday 11th August in the main foyer between 9am and 3 pm.

Pip Duncan, Education and Marketing Manager for Vegetables.co.nz, said that “Vegetables.co.nz is encouraging kids to cook and eat healthy meals by including fresh New Zealand vegetables as a key component in this competition. Learning to cook a healthy meal is an invaluable life skill and these competitors are our culinary stars of the future. The dishes these young kids are cooking are skilful and creative and It’s wonderful to see the support they are receiving from their parents and whanau”.

The Vegetables.co.nz team promotes fresh New Zealand grown vegetables and is supported by New Zealand commercial vegetable growers.

The Regional finalists come from all over the country and although parents and caregivers can help with set-up and pack-up, once the clock starts ticking, the kids do everything else on their own.  The judges also watch each contestant in action to assess both knife and cookery skills.
Contestants have a cooking time limit of 30 minutes and then present their creation on a plate. As per popular television cooking competitions, their plate is taken to the judges’ table where presentation and taste is evaluated.

“We at NZChefs Association hope that the NZHC will inspire them to teach others in their Communities about the value of healthy eating,” said Janine Quaid NZChefs Executive Officer.
These youngsters, (from 5 to 12 years old) will cook their favourite dish under tough, camp fire-like conditions (two gas burners and access to a microwave) compared with the professional Nestle Toque d’Or contestants who have 5 hours and state of the art equipment.
